To build a simple table

The Slab

The first step is anything but simple; Selecting a slab with character. This one has what appears to be a partially healed windshake, which almost looks like gills…

Mending

An abundance of character always means a need for repairs. Not only did it have features needing fill, it had actually split and dried in a contorted fashion. Some creative prying and some clamping realigned the grain like a broken bone. Butterflies will stabilize the fracture above and below the slab.

cONSTRUCTION

Square slots are chiseled into the base of the slab, at a slight angle. Legs are matched and inserted into these slots. In this orientation, gravity forces them together more firmly, making for a table that wants to stand. A cross pin is added to prevent the legs from shaking loose when the table is lifted and moved.
